UniQure is a leader in gene therapy treatments, holding the world’s first approved gene therapy as well as the first commercially licensed gene therapy manufacturing facility. Based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and with facilities in Lexington, Massachusetts, the company’s success is reflected in its continued growth and increased presence in North America.

The 13,000 SF suite at 91 Hartwell Avenue presented two opportunities; to create a new ‘front door’ to the Lexington operation consistent with the corporate identity and company culture existing in the main headquarters across the Atlantic, and rethinking the workspace and amenities to entice staff back into returning to the office. With the exception of the scientists working in the R&D labs, the office staff had been working mostly remote since the pandemic. Providing a place where people could come work together, while providing plenty of options for private work and areas to retreat were vital to the project’s success.

The hub of the space is the multi-purpose employee lounge and welcome center, located right off the main entrance. With multiple areas for casual conversation and gathering, the space offers separate coffee bars and employee kitchenette that also function to set up catered meals for company events and Board meetings. The use of natural materials and a soft palette with accents of texture and color references the Amsterdam office while maintaining unique finishes and personality. The built-in fireplace wall provides the backdrop for regular ‘fireside chats’ at the company’s all-hands meetings.

Responding to requests for more private working space from staff, we increased the ratio of private offices to open workstations. Private offices are smaller than typical, and are sized the same as phone room/ 2 person meeting spaces increasing flexibility. All workstations and offices can be shared by staff that work alternate days remote, increasing occupancy of the space now that a hybrid work model is the norm. Providing many casual seating options, we focused on bringing the comforts of home back to the office, along with the people accustomed to having them
