Built in 1929, this 20,000 SF brick and limestone house contains many original pieces and architectural details taken from a 17thcentury chateau in the Loire Valley in France, including marble fireplaces and boiserie wood. Bequeathed to Brown University by the late Mary Elizabeth Sharpe, the program called for conversion to meeting, classroom, study and faculty offices for the Departments of French, Hispanic, and Italian Studies.

Working closely with the Sharpe family and the University we developed a design approach that would preserve the structure’s fine interiors while making significant building systems and life-safety upgrades. Services included concentrated involvement with the Zoning Board, Historic Preservation Commission, Handicapped Access Board, Fire Department and Building Department to obtain variances so the building’s integrity could be preserved.
