The Wilder Companies redeveloped Westford Valley Marketplace for UBS as a Whole Foods-anchored experiential retail center. Like many retail centers of its vintage, Westford Valley has a covered aracde running along the front of the in-line lease spaces. This type of arcade, while originally conceived of as protection from the weather, tends to obscure retailer identity and deaden the shopping experience. To breath new life into the property, architectural variety was introduced into the building facades. Drawing from traditional New England references, a language of facade motifs gather retailers into groups and break down the monotonous and long existing facades while maintaining ample tenant signage panels.
